Michael Z. Gordon
MUSICIAN | SONGWRITER | PRODUCER
Michael Z. Gordon wrote his first hit song," Surfer's Stomp" in 1961 almost immediately after he formed "The Mar-kets".
Soon after he formed a new band, "The Routers" and went into the studio with them to record the national hit song, "Let's Go!". In 1964 The Routers appeared as themselves in the film "Surf Party" starring Bobby Vinton.
Afterwards he returned to the Mar-kets (now re-named "The Marketts") and wrote the smash hit, "Outer Limits", which went to #1 and earned him his first BMI award for instrumental of the year as well as gold record status.
The Marketts scored another big hit in 1966 with their recording of Neal Hefti's "Batman Theme", which managed to hit the charts before the "official" TV show version!
He later teamed up with songwriter Jimmy Griffin and wrote over sixty songs which resulted in over one hundred recordings including "Apologize" (most famously recorded by Ed Ames) which earned him his second BMI award.
Gordon went on to compose and contribute music for movies and TV including "Pulp Fiction", "The Outsiders" 2005 re-release, "Inherent Vice", "The Wonder Years" and the Tom Hanks HBO series, "From the Earth to the Moon".
Michael still writes music and records under The Marketts moniker, although his primary focus since 2001 has been producing feature films with his company Americana Films.
His many film projects include "Narc", starring Ray Liotta and Jason Patric, "In Enemy Hands" starring William H. Macy and Scott Caan and "Dirty Little Trick" starring Michael Madsen and Dean Cain.
Michael's first hit record is still a classic that's impossible to listen to without smiling and tapping your feet along with the beat!
Still a staple at sporting events worldwide , "Let's Go!" is the perfect song to get yourself (our your team) motivated.
Over the course of his award-winning musical career, Michael has written many great songs.
This collection comprises some of his best work and includes songs not only recorded by Michael's bands The Routers, The Marketts and The Agates but also Lesley Gore, Brian Hyland, The Roosters, Gary Lewis, Bobby Vee and Jimmy Griffin.
This career retrospective is a must-own for fans of Michael's, or any fan of good old-fashioned American songwriting.
